Educational Center for Kids: The Seven Species

A Unique Design by Sarit Shani Hay

The Seven Species is a unique Educational Center promoting imagination and creativity. It spans a cluster of six kindergartens for children aged 3-6, a play commons, and an empowerment center. Each has an independent identity, and together they form an educational space offering a friendly, informal environment.

The design theme of The Seven Species was inspired by the history of Kfar Shemaryahu, originally an agricultural community. The agricultural motifs at the core of the concept pay homage to the area's roots. The compound's title, "The Seven Species," was derived from the bible, symbolizing the fertility of the land. Each kindergarten is signified by their names: Olive (Zayit), Palm (Tamar), Pomegranate (Rimon), Wheat (Hita), Fig (Te’ena), and Vine (Gefen). Each distinctive character served as a design code, influencing the color scheme, components, and graphic motifs.

The lobby design of The Seven Species follows the language of an agricultural village, creating a captivating journey for the children. Sculptural amorphous islands, reminiscent of traditional wooden toys, serve as the starting point. Lego-like trees tower over the islands, further connecting the children to the rustic roots of the place. The design utilizes basic shapes and raw materials such as plywood and solid wood to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

All the furniture and objects in The Seven Species were custom-made, using advanced CNC technologies. The use of raw materials such as plywood and solid wood adds to the natural and organic feel of the space. The attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident throughout the center, creating a unique and immersive environment for the children.

The Seven Species spans a total area of 2400 m². Each kindergarten extends over 150 m², providing ample space for learning and play. The Empowerment Center covers 440 m², offering additional resources and support for the children.

The design of The Seven Species was the result of profound dialogue with the architects of the building, Shoshany Architects, and the local council. Observation of the kindergarten children and collaboration with pedagogues and educators played a crucial role in shaping the design. The underlying pedagogical theme of "embracing the other" reflects the ideology of the complex, promoting social tolerance and acceptance of every child, regardless of their background.

The Seven Species, designed by Sarit Shani Hay, received the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2014. This award recognizes the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated in the design. The center's strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill showcase a remarkable level of excellence, creating a space that inspires positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
